Royce acquired a professional degree in Architecture (NDSU, 1969) and a Master’s Degree in Architectural History (UVa, 1975) and practiced as an historical architect in the upper- Midwest for 30 years. In 2001, he left practice to assume the role of Midwest Director of the National Trust for Historic Preservation in Chicago. In 2012 he retired and now serves as a director and technical consultant to the Jeffris Family Foundation which funds historic preservation projects in eight Midwestern states. There he advises grantees on project development and reviews their design documents to assess their readiness for support from the foundation.
